Delicacies of Kundapur – Vol 1
By Sheethal
I love food. Being a complete foodie, I love trying out delicacies when I visit any place. When I visited Kundapur, I had the pleasure of trying out so many delicacies, you won’t believe it! Most of these delicacies are everyday delicacies. They’re common in every household of the coastal region. However, some delicacies are specially made during festivals such as Deepavali, Hosthu and Thulasi Puja. Fish is common in every house. After trying most of these dishes, I found that there is one common factor connecting them all. Most of them are baked with very little use of oil which makes these dishes highly nutritious! Even the ingredients used are very common place and organic in nature. Here’s a list of everyday delicacies and special delicacies. What are you waiting for? Go ahead, indulge yourself!
The most common, everyday delicacy is Neer Dosa (Theli dwasi - ತೆಳಿ ದ್ವಾಸಿ). Dosa as you know is made from a batter of rice and urad dal (ಉದ್ದಿನ ಬೇಳೇ). However, Neer dosa is exclusively made with just rice batter. The rice is soaked and ground into a fine (extremely fine) thick paste. The batter is then left overnight to rise (ಉಬ್ಬುದ್). There is a special tava to make neer dosa and the technique used is also very unique. Let me explain. The thick batter is mixed with water just enough to make the batter watery. Once the tava is hot, it is then sprinkled on the tava. The baking method is the same as a dosa. The sprinkling, you have to see it to believe it! The neer dosa is then served hot with yummy coconut chutney. It is absolutely mind-blowing with chicken sukka/curry. This delicacy is usually had for breakfast. You can have it for lunch too with chicken or fish curry.
I forgot to mention earlier that I have a sweet tooth. I’m not going to wait any longer to introduce this next yummy delicacy. It is a sweet dish called Shekkit (ಶೆಕಿಟ್). This sweet dish is also made with rice. You have to soak rice and then grind it in a grinding stone. However, you have to be careful while grinding it. You cannot use too much water. It has to, has to be thick, more dough like in consistency. This requires a filling which usually consists of a mixture of grated coconut, jaggery and ground cardamom. The rice dough is then made into small rice balls and spread on a single turmeric leaf. That’s the specialty of this dish, the turmeric leaf. The health benefits of this are immense. It is then filled with the filling and then baked. It is made specially for Deepavali. It is served hot and usually is an evening snack. You’ll notice there is absolutely no oil used in this dish! So healthy!
When you
visit the coastal area, these are must try delicacies. Check out these
two for now. There are many more delicacies to follow. Keep watching
this space for more!

A view of the moon from the shores of Kota Padukare beach!
The moon was always used as a reference in almost all the literature of the world as something that was unattainable. It has been epitomized as an object of utter beauty, silence and romance. For poets, the moon was always the unyielding lover who would never come down to embrace her partner on earth. Well, well! If that’s a minute part of the story, read on to know more about other interesting facts of this beautiful celestial object!
The Moon was formed by a collision with our planet about 4.5 billion years ago. It was so large that a huge spray of material was thrown into space. The orbiting ring of debris gathered itself into a sphere and formed the Moon. This sphere is 1/4th the diameter of the Earth and comprises of only 17% of the gravitational power of the earth! Nevertheless, it is the second brightest object in the sky after the Sun.
The Moon's surface is about the same now as it was 3 billion years ago which is a major contrast to the earth. And it is the only extraterrestrial body to have been visited by humans.
The Moon was first visited by the Soviet spacecraft Luna 2 in 1959. So far, only 12 people have stepped onto the surface of the Moon. The first person to walk on the Moon ever, was Neil Armstrong. And the last person on the Moon was Eugene A. Cernan who followed his partner Harrison H. Schmitt into the lunar lander on December 11, 1972.
The Moon may look like a huge ball of cheese! Unfortunately, it’s not made of cheese, though we see numerous holes, small and big on the surface of the moon. The surface of the moon is scarred with millions of these holes called ‘craters’. These are formed when collisions between an asteroid, comet or meteorite and the Moon occur. These hit the Moon with a wide range of speed, averaging about 12 miles per second (20 kilometers per second).
Now this object of beauty may be under threat for some obvious reasons like global warming being the main cause. I would like to take a moment to say that we as humans have caused much damage to nature on the whole which in turn is taking its toll on various things, of which the moon could be on the hit list, apart from the extinction of animals, melting of the ice caps, etc.
The most obvious changes to the moon noticed across the globe is, its color. In some parts of the world it turns red, in some, orange and in some blue! According to research, this is caused due to the high concentration of dust and smoke particles in the air caused by us humans with our ever growing needs. So, here’s a gentle reminder for all the generations to come, to help the moon survive. So that our future may see the moon and not be disappointed!!
As Emmanuel G. Mesthene puts it rightly, “Ten years ago the Moon was an inspiration to poets and an opportunity for lovers. Ten years from now it will be just another airport”.
Udupi, Santhekatte, Brahmavara, Sasthaana, Saligrama…Kota…
Right Right! And thus starts the journey. When traveling to the coastal side of Karnataka, one hears a familiar ring of these places. It is a feast for one’s senses. Lush green paddy fields, a blessing to the sore eye. You see the coconut and areca nut trees swaying in the strong yet light sea breeze making you want to throw your cares to the wind. The smell of the sea intoxicating the nostrils. Oh! what joy one feels! It dawns a realization to let go and enjoy what befriends the eye.
There is something special about each of these places. The Ashta Mathas, Yakshagana, the infamous Udupi masala dosa are a few specialties of Udupi. Bhramavara is the relay center of Mangalore AIR. Saligrama houses the famous Guru Narasimha temple.
Coming to Kota, we have the famous Kannada writer, novelist and Yakshgana exponent, K. Shivaram Karanth who hails from this place. The beautiful Amritheshwari temple stands the test of time and is the pride of one and all at Kota.
This is just a glimpse of the obvious from the Karavali. Stay tuned to learn a lot more and get lost in it’s enthralling beauty.
Namma Maneyangala
Namma Maneyangala – a place that reminds me of the laughter of children playing under ever so watchful eye of the elders. A place where people sat down with a cup of tea, relaxing and watching the sun go down. Life was good. People took time to catch up with each other every evening. It was not long before life put on it’s running shoes and it became ever so difficult to know what’s happening around us. Namma Maneyangala is a place to connect with everyone and to come together to share ideas and thoughts. Come. Connect. Share.

THE BALANCING ACT!
By Sheethal
Whoa!! Wake up, prepare breakfast, send your children to school, get ready and rush to office!! Doesn’t this remind you of something?? Yes, it’s you, rushing to office after all your morning chores. I am sure many women would agree this to be their morning schedule, but the working woman doesn’t have a choice or does she?
Well, if she does have a choice, how does she manage to balance the personal and the professional? The main reason for this could be the changing times and the need for a better standard of living. With women venturing into almost all the fields, it is the need of the hour to prove her mettle wherever she goes. But there are certain responsibilities she has to shoulder as a woman. It may be as simple as cooking or looking after her in-laws, her children, or just keeping the house clean. And mind you, it’s not as easy as it sounds.
With this arises the next question, does she have the time to build support systems like friends and in-laws? Well, as a matter of fact, she does not. As she strives on the path of progress it proves very tough for the modern working woman to keep these systems lubricated. But it is very important for her to nurture and build these support systems as they do come in handy someday.
Catering to the needs of her family and children also forms a major part of being a woman. This translates into being with them when they need her. Be it helping the children with their daily homework or playing a game of scrabble, or cooking their favorite dish for dinner! Sure she needs to be strong enough to shoulder the enormous responsibilities that come by and I am sure she does a great job of handling everything with utmost expertise.
Though these responsibilities may dampen her spirits, here are some tips for balancing her work life and home.
1. Take the time to find out what really matters to you in life, in a word it would mean – Prioritize.
2. Drop unnecessary activities. This would result in efficient time management wherein you can squeeze in some time just for yourself.
3. Protect your private time. Create boundaries that keep work from intruding on family time. Carve out hours that contribute to yourself and your relationship.
4. Accept help to balance your life. Allow yourself to rely on friends or your spouse to look after the children or run an errand for you, while you take care of other top priorities
5. Finally, plan fun outings with your spouse children or friends and indulge in relaxation. After all, what is life when you don’t have the time for it!

What It Takes to Burn Those Calories
By Sheethal
Do you remember your first step? What a fuss everyone made! And then you continued to walk right on through childhood, adolescence, and into adulthood, but somewhere along the way, like most adults, you probably stopped walking so much. Part of the reason may be the hectic, stressful life that all of us lead, with not a moment to spare for recreation or formal exercise. The environment plays a part too; inactivity has been engineered into our lives, thanks to increased automation right from escalators to remote controls and many more.
Here’s one way to feel great, have more energy and improve your overall health, take a Walk!! Walking is one of the best forms of exercise and you can do it almost anywhere, anytime, and for free. The generally recognized health benefits of walking regularly are far-reaching. These include reduced risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, reduced stress, weight control, muscle tone, and cardio fitness. Walking for exercise does not need to be strenuous to produce results. Minimal walking has been reported to produce measurable benefits, even among those who are least active.
Finding the best time to walk can be mind boggling, but only you can be your best judge. So, find a time that will fit best into your schedule as it tends to vary with each person. Experts agree, it’s not the time of day that matters as much as finding the time you can set aside consistently for your workouts. A little experimentation with your own schedule and rhythms should put you on the right track.
Once you’re on track, burning calories becomes an important part of walking. You start burning calories after walking for a period of 20 minutes at a normal pace. You could start with a good 10 minutes and work your way up to 15 and 20 and so forth. One way to get started could be just by adding short walks into your day where ever possible. For e.g. take the stairs instead of riding the elevator or escalator, take a walk after dinner, or when out and about choose the farthest spot in the parking lot. Studies show that, an individual weighing between 150 to 250 pounds can easily burn between 100 to 166 calories per mile.
Here are some tips for effective walking:
• Walk heel to toe and not flatfooted to increase speed.
• Contact the ground with your heel.
• Push off with your toes.
• Keep your torso upright as leaning forward or back will slow you down.
• Keep your elbows at 90 degrees and your hands relaxed.
• Swing your arms forward and back and keep them close to your body. Your hands should not cross the midline of your body to maintain efficiency. Eventually, speed up your arm swing to increase your speed and your legs will follow!
• Keep your shoulders and neck relaxed. Head should be upright, eyes looking forward.
Finally, what to wear while walking? I would rate a good pair of running shoes (preferably with heavy rubber or crepe rubber soles) to do the trick. It is very important to keep in mind that our feet are under pressure when walking. A little pampering for our feet won’t do any harm. Along with those, loose, comfortable clothing must be worn for better air circulation as one tends to sweat a lot while walking.
So put on your track shoes and get moving to burn those calories! As walking can only do you good if you do it!!
